HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING
|
Another observation as a student of human nature... They say you can measure a man's worth by the friend's he has. It seems that we also measure a man's success by the work he does. I'm fascinated by worth and success lately. I feel, for the most part, the jobs I've had have been very worthwhile. I felt that I was successful at most of them. Yet when you look at potentials and possibilities I don't know that I could be said to be successful. I find it interesting that some people can do a job that makes them happy, and as long as they are happy no one says much about how successful they are. How much money do they bring in? How far up the 'ladder' have they made it? It doesn't matter. They are happy doing what they do. Does age matter? If you are closer to retirement and puttering around a few jobs that make you happy... as opposed to being fresher out of college and doing the same kind of puttering... Is one more acceptable than the other? At some point, did being happy in what you do quit mattering?Labels: life, work |

THAT'S WHAT I WANT
|
I am being upfront when I say that this is totally a PMS post (Poor Me Syndrome). So keep that in mind.
I just got back from a job interview. I think it went well. It seems rare lately that I feel like I'm not just pulling the answers out of my ass. Apparently I went to college with woman doing the interview. Hopefully that puts a couple bonus points in my column.
I'm just sick and tired of the race. I'm tired of feeling like I'm 2nd place to anyone else when it comes to a job, money, etc... Call it jealousy or whatever you want. Sometimes I feel like I've made the wrong choices for my life and I would lose too much to try and take another road.
I'm envious of people that are younger than me, smarter than me, luckier than me, who are making more money and have a better job. Silly me for following my heart and wanting to make a difference in the world or in someone's life. Appreciation to Money conversion isn't worth shit when you've got bills to pay.
I know people younger who make twice as much as me. It makes my stomach turn. Why did I have to pick psychology? I know people who speak two languages fluently and have jobs literally handed to them because of the demand for bilinguality. I'd love to punch the career adviser it the neck who said that psychology was going to be a needed career in the coming years. Way to flood the market, jackhole!
I'm in a vicious circle at the moment. A better paying job takes a Masters degree. A Masters degree takes money. Money comes from a better paying job.
I know there are ways through this. I'm not saying this in some desperate cry to a world that I am oblivious too. I know what can be done, but that doesn't change my current feelings.
I understand part of how I'm feeling is because I'm comparing myself to other people. It's apples and oranges, as they say. Logically I get it. I get that just because my choices were different doesn't make them wrong. But dammit it sure feels like it.
In a couple days I'll shake this off. I'll realize what I do have and look to the future of the potential that is out there. In the meantime, there will be stewing and some tantrum-throwing.Labels: job, life, money, rant |

YOU'RE GONNA FIND OUT WHO YOUR TRUE FRIENDS ARE
|
As I've mentioned before, part of my job involves working in various local schools for short periods of time. This is nice because I get to see a wide variety of environments. You might recall, at one point I wanted to work in a school setting (or at least with kids).
ANYWAY... In the latest school that we're working in they recently gave all the students a compatibility test. The results were then sold to the students as part of a fundraiser for FBLA. Ok. Nice idea. Great way to make money. But... I have an issue with such a survey. Are you surprised?
The school isn't that large. A mid-sized, small town school for the area, about 500 kids. What we witnessed was high school drama at it's best. Friends laughing at who the computer picked as compatibility matches. Many kids 'grossing out' over having a geek or dork ranking high on their list. Boyfriends and girlfriends questioning relationship stability over a test. A test! A survey more appropriately...
I'm sure the intention is way different from what I see. Yet, it seems like just another way to reinforce cliques and stereotypes. Liking someone (friend or otherwise) for who they are as you get to know them, having been replaced by a simple 40-question survey. Saves you the time of possibly making a new friend.
Granted, I'm probably a bit more worked up over this than might be rational, but I don't think it is a good message to really send out. "Don't be friends with this person... Instead be friends with whom you've been selected by a lifeless emotionless computer algorithm."
It even happens in the dating world. There are several personals sites that offers compatibility matching. To a certain extent I can understand a desire for such a thing. Why waste your time one someone for whatever your reasoning might be? Yet... I think there is a certain amount of close-mindedness in only going by results. And this is what saddens me. High school kids seeing this in school and not fully appreciating the 'entertainment' value of it. Going on to possibly use dating sites and once again not fully appreciating the 'entertainment' value.
It's like believing in horoscopes. At the risk of sounding hypocritical I will admit to having read and compared horoscopes of the Cute Teacher and myself. The difference is, I don't take it to heart. I don't believe that just because it's written in the stars that it is true.
To all this I just have to laugh. As I hope others do. I hope the majority of the people who take any such compatibility survey not only realize that results aren't written in stone. Just because a computer says you're a good match with someone doesn't mean you actually will be. Vice versa... You might be passing up a gem of a fella just because you don't have the same taste in music.Labels: compatibility, friendship, life, love |
