Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin

Ok... So I suppose the song is a little melodramatic for the subject, but it also somewhat fitting. This most might give some a little insight into my personality. Maybe even to a part of my personality that they don't always see... Good or bad...

I saw my father of the first time in almost ten years on Sunday. The short story behind why it has been ten years is this. He walked out on his second wife and disappeared for quite sometime. Then finally resurfaced long enough to get a divorce, then disappeared yet again. Then to come back yet again after quite some time. First he contacted my Grandparents. Then he come for a visit.

By this time we'd spoken on the phone at least once and had emailed a couple of times. After what I'd gone through with my mother I'd learned that asking the 'why' questions, while obligatory, would rarely result in any answer that would satisfy the reason I asked to begin with.

The timing of his visit happened to coincide with my ten year high school reunion. My plan was to stay at my Grandmother's during that weekend so I didn't have to drive. What happened was I missed out on a chance at seeing some great friends and good times because I was too cowardly to face my father. I would've been drinking that weekend anyway... So it was also probably just as well... I get rather ...vocal... when I'm really upset and I can be quite vindictive with my words. Add a liquor-loosened tongue and it could have potentially been a bad situation. Regardless... I didn't go.

So now we come to Sunday... My purpose in going was simple. I was doing it for the sake of my Grandmother. For once in her life, I wanted her to have some peace. I could make a 'goodwill' visit, play nicely, have dinner, and hold my tongue for a respectable amount of time. My Grandmother knew going into this that I was doing it for her. I'd come to a conclusion a long time ago, that having a 'father' in my life something that I wasn't going to be able to have like some people. I've dealt with that only way I knew how. The times that I've attempted... honestly attempted... to let him back into my life he's blown yet again. So... what's another ten years of not seeing him.

I woke up Sunday and had a million reasons going through my mind as to why I didn't want to go to my Grandparents house for dinner. Sick... Car problems... Just admit it, that I didn't want to go... Yet, I couldn't do that to my Grandmother. So I sucked it up. Said a little prayer... (yes... I occasionally pray) and went on my merry little way.

Without a radio in my Jeep, an hour drive is a long time to be alone with my thoughts... I had myself so worked up for a verbal tongue lashing that I was almost seething by the time I arrived. I had it set in my mind that I wasn't hugging him. I had it set in my mind that if his current wife (whom I've already traded a few harsh words with via email) said one cross word to me I would come unhinged. How would I react to 'siblings?' They are innocent in it all, yet living reminders of infidelity.

I walked in. Saw my Grandmother... then my father came downstairs. He walked up to me. I shook his hand. He commented on how much I'd grown (....in ten years) and I walked up stairs. I was ready to go out to dinner and get this over with. Dinner was quiet... quick... and quiet... During dinner my father asked me a couple of questions. Pretty basic things about my job. I answered, but didn't really leave a whole lot of openings for rebuttlas or follow-up questions. (Remember... still trying not to seethe) Back to my Grandmother's house... We sat around watching television (some BIZARRE PBS kids show... it was like acid-trippin' pregnant Teleltubbies that didn't do anything more than shimmy) for a half an hour and then finally I got up to leave.

My Grandmother and father followed me out the door... He said, "It was good to see you," Yup... I responded. "It's been a long time." Yup again... and I was off.

Was I too cold? Perhaps... I guess when torn between even going at all, letting the fear of even facing him get me, or showing up and doing what needed to be done. I did want I had to do... but I did it as minimally as possible.

I can honestly say that I'd be ok if that was all. As cold as it may sound. I've lived this long without a father as an active role in my life.

[LONG POST WARNING!! But worth the read]

I think we have the 'mood' set for this post... So keep that in mind when reading this.

I've got a predicament. I've debated about whether or not I should even bring it up in my blog since it sort of has to do with my blog and my website. Then, I remembered something I said a while back. I started this blog as not only a way to chronicle some of my goings-on, but also to be somewhat entertaining, and to be able to speak my mind about something. The internet is a great way to do that. It is also a haven for freaks and weirdos and people who have WAY to much free time on their hands and see nothing better to do than to harass others.

Knowing this I was still willing to create a blog and a website and share what I wanted to share.

In the past month it would seem that I've gained an 'admirer.' Someone who has nothing better to do than email me and leave comments on my quiz. It may be one person. It may not. Either way... Here is the situation.

"Jerrod Becker" (or so the email address stated jerrodbecker@yahoo.com) was the first to email me saying that he came across my website and noticed that there were some similar interests and wanted to know if I would like to chat sometime and make a new friend possible. So he decided to email me.

1) Who the fuck emails people like that out of the blue? My website is NOT a personal ad. I have a personal ad for that.

I emailed back asking who he was and commenting on the obvious strangeness of emailing someone like that based on a website.

A few days went by. I presumed it was just some spam ad that just happened to hit a couple of the things that I have actually talked about at some point either on my log or my website. The response back was cryptic. "Jerrod" stated that he got my email from a mutual friend at a party.

2) I've never been to a party with anyone named Jerrod. Any party that I have been to, I think someone who was a friend of mine would comment to me at some point that they were giving out my email address.

3) Who the hell gives out email addresses as a means to initially contact someone? Why not actually speak to me if you want to ask me something?

So I emailed back (curiosity piqued) and asked who the friend was or what party. Both questions came back unanswered, really... "Jerrod" couldn't recall as it had been some time ago last year.

4) So you don't recall the name of the mutual friend who gave you my email address?

This email also came back with a "sorry to have bothered" statement. Ok... fair enough. I admit my Colombo side kicked in and now I just wanted to know who had the balls to take such a risk. Besides, didn't "Jerrod" originally say that they stumbled across my website and decided to email me? It was also odd that the first email he sent was from a yahoo address account that was created that same day. So an email address was made just to email me 'anonymously'? Thus I began to think that it was most likely just coincidental spam. Yet the responses back seemed to disprove that theory.

Then the quiz spamming began...

I used to have a link to my Friend Quiz on the left hand side. I've since taken it down when someone going by the alias Prefacio (which means preface in Spanish) decided to try and get a perfect score and push all the other people off the top ten scores list. Using various names and making various references to my blog it was apparent where this person found out about my quiz.

This was a bit more annoying. Each day Prefacio would make anywhere from 6 to 12 entries on my quiz. I'd wipe them out and he would do the same again the next day. I finally found this game to tire and said screw it... it's not that important. One of the functions of the quiz is to see who has made multiple entries on the chance that someone does use various names. In one of the names used by Prefacio claimed that he also knows me. Now while I'd not spoken of the whole Jerrod Email scenario to anyone at this point, some assumptions could be made as to whether or not it was the same person or not...

I finally removed the link just because I found the game of removing spammed entries to be boring.

Now we come to the latest round of the game. "Peter Finch" (pf2211@yahoo.com) emailed me a cryptic remark in reference to the Friday Five meme I posted last week, 3/19. This was not spam. The brief comment was very specifically using statements I'd made in that meme. Odd indeed. According to his yahoo account, it was also created on the same time as the first email came in.

I decided to email this stranger as back as well. But my response was very simply... "Huh?" [send] I didn't receive a response back. Which is fine because I really didn't ask a question.

I decided to pull a little test... I'd not heard from Prefacio in a while and put my quiz back up. A couple days went by and sure enough... he's back! YAY!!! Duh... This time using an entry name of "PF (aka Prefacio)".

5) Prefacio = PF = Peter Finch? Who knows...? It doesn't really matter.

In the meantime, "Peter" emails again, offering a fortune from a fortune cookie as I had requested in a blog post some time ago. So someone's been doing their remedial reading.

So we come to why I even mention this to begin with...

If this person (or any of these people) actually know me then they would know that I'd prefer that they would be straight forward about who they are as opposed to all the secrecy and cryptic comments. If a 'mutual friend' actually DID give my email to someone, would that 'friend' please step forward and let me know. I am not a person who appreciates stupid mysteries and juvenile mocking.

Will I be sleepless until I find out. Good God, no... I have way better things to concern myself with. I only comment on it now because I feel that one of the best ways to find an answer is to make the question known. Will the odd emails or quiz spamming continue? Who knows... Probably. Once again. I have better things to concern myself with.

I write this post as an opportunity for Jerrod, Prefacio, or Peter to know that I am not willing to play along now that I've said what was on my mind about the subject.

Jerrod and Peter can continue to email... Emails are easily filtered.
Prefacio can continue to spam my quiz. Quizzes can be closed or remade or just plain ignored.

Have a good day!! Hope you find another turkey to play with.

STARRY STARRY NIGHT by Don McLean

Allow me to geek it up a bit... or is that nerd out...

There is big news in the astronomy community with the discovery of a new planetoid orbiting the Sun. Sedna, as it has been unofficially named is the latest object to be found in our solar system. Quaoar was found in 2002 in the Kuiper Belt beyond Neptune.

Ok... Have I tossed out enough nonsensical words to make you wonder if I'm talking about real life or an episode of Star Trek?

I guess that is my whole point for being so excited about this, as I am. Right now is a truly exciting time. We have robots exploring Mars. There is talk of another Moon landing. We have discovered other objects that might one day be consider planets. If you enjoy anything about space and outer space sci-fi then I'm sure you are just wet with excitement.

Yet, there is a down side to this... The two possible planetary candidates are currently stuck in planetoid status. Quaoar and Sedna while relatively close in size to Pluto are actually threatening Pluto's status as a full-fledged planet. Scientists go round and round on this all the time.

Big deal...

We have Inner Planets... (Mercury, Venus, Earth, & Mars)
We have Outer Planets... (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, & Pluto)
Why not have another grouping of planets? Group Pluto with Quaoar and Sedna and give them a fancy name that only the really anal retentive will ever remember to use.

I know I won't see it in my lifetime, but the idea that someday Earth might be sending a robot to explore planet Sedna is an amazing dream.

57 CHANNELS AND NOTHING'S ON by Bruce Springsteen

Ok... normally I would be all about any reality show you can think of. Put them on an island. Give them a stunt. Make them eat bugs. Follow six young adults around the country in an RV. I'm all about it. Yet I think even I have found my limit when it comes to reality television.

I offer you several prime examples and shows that piss me off. I won't even link to their sites, because I don't even want to give them that much promotion.

Average Joe 1 & 2 - You take an unsuspecting woman who thinks she is going to meet the hunk of her dreams. Then unload a bus of average, and in some cases, obvious ringers, who are below average. The look on her face when the 'average' guys stepped off the bus and met her for the first time says it all. She was shocked and obviously a little disappointed. The twist then was to toss in a few hunks to try and woo her. I didn't watch this show, but I read about her in an interview and I honestly felt bad for her having to choose. Simply because it was a no win situation. If she was to pick the 'hunk' she is shallow. If she was to pick the 'average joe' then is she just playing along because she doesn't want to seem shallow?

The Littlest Bachelor - It's your typical dating reality show, except it is all midgets (little people for those who may be offended by me saying the word "midget"). I've seen advertisements and a couple people were talking about it at work. The twist was to throw non-midget women in the mix for the bachelor to have to choose from. Basically, the same idea of the twist in Average Joe.

American Idol - I know I might get some flack for this one, but until it gets down the final dozen it is just painful to watch. Some of those people have no business singing at all. I don't claim to be any better. Obviously, someone needs to tell them they don't have talent or aren't as good as they think they are, but it doesn't need to be televised. I honestly feel physical pain hearing some of those performers in the very beginning.

Playing It Straight - The schtick to this piece of tripe is to have a herd of men for one woman to sort through and eliminate. Her task is to not only find a suitable suitor, but figure out if he is straight or not. They had a show similar to this called Boy Meets Boy where the bachelor had to weed out the straight guys in from his dating pool. This show isn't much better.

Looking back on the type of shows I don't like... I guess I'm not much one for public rejection.

When I was bitching to Mike about this he said to be mad at the people who watch these shows not the shows. I dont' know how much I can go with that. It is true that if a person is watching such a show and contributing to giving it a high rating that producers are more likely to make more of them. Yet at the same time... It is the same sick minds that decided giving $10,000 to a father who's son pounded him in the crotch with a whiffle ball and had the scene caught on video tape that also came up with this.

So please... be careful why you are watching some of these shows. Don't give anyone any more ideas.

EVERYBODY'S WORKING FOR THE WEEKEND by Loverboy
a.k.a.
SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS by Dishwalla

Ok. Lots to talk about so let's just get into it... So brace yoruself for another comic rambling!!

First off... My workout regemin didn't last more than a week. I went 'faithfully' at various times... And without making excuses, I think that was my problem. I couldn't find a consistent time to go. With Spring just around the corner and nicer weather on the horizon I know that I will get out and jog/bike. I don't doubt that. I just need to find a time to fit an actualy 'work out' into my routine. I'd like to put on some good muscle weight. *laughs* Listen to me trying to sound like I might actually care about what shape I'm in. It's kind of scary, actually.

Someone left a cup with a few swigs of iced tea in the bathroom. It's been there for at least the last three days. Why they bathroom? Why leave it there of all places? Do I clean up someone elses mess?

I had a great weekend last weekend... Looking to have another great weekend this weekend. Because I work Friday's, that leaves me one good day to go out on the weekend. Not too many people are out on a Sunday. So I took a Friday off, went out to dinner at PF Chang's with a couple friends, then went downtown and hit a bar for the evening. Good times.

Had a date on Saturday. It was a great time. I've never had someone go to a whole lot of trouble and plan out an iternerary of a date for me. I'm usually the one who does that. So it was different to be on the other side. Dinner at Trovato's (I'd never been there before). Took in a performance of Jekyll & Hyde at the Dundee Dinner Theatre. Very nice time. I'm certainly intrigued and interested... yet... we'll see where things go... I need to take things slow.

This week of work has been a wash... I wish I had more time to get some of the things done that I need to do. Not that I would work more hours in the week, so much as had more time that I could allocate specifically to the tasks I need to accomplish.

I went to my Grandparents house Thursday. I typically make it down to see them once a month (and call weekly). I don't know how it came up in conversation, but my Grandmother was telling me about how she had two grocery sacks full of clothes of my Grandfather's to take to the Salvation Army. Well, I found myself rummaging thru the sacks and found about eight shirts that I liked. They are a little retro looking. The funny thing is... I'd been looking for a couple shirts that had a retro kinda feel to them, but never coud find anything at Good Will and wasn't willing to pay high prices for some actual label.

My Grandmother just sat back and laughed, commenting that I would've never shopped at a second hand store when I was in junior high/high school. "Duh..." was all I could've said to that. I'm 29 now. I'm way over having to have certain labels (not that I ever was like that) or a certain style of clothing. Hell... I wear Hawaiian shirts now on a weekly basis. Trust me when I say... clothing-wise I wear what I like.

There is a huge greasy smudge right on the middle of this monitor that I can't seem to wipe off. DAMN!!!

My father and his latest family are scheduled to make an appearance this month sometime. I don't know the dates exactly. I know that they will be in Nebraska about a week. I'm unsure how I feel about it. This visit has been puches off for months now. They were supposed to come for a visit last summer, which was delayed till November, and then again till March. So March is here and it's not being rainchecked another time.

I feel semi-conflicted about what I should do/want to do.

The last time they were in the state was at the same time as my 10 year high school reunion. Because I knew I'd be drinking, I wasn't planning on driving back home, and I was just going to stay in Nebraska City. Well, I opted not to go to the first night of the reunion because I wouldn't be able to stay at Grandparents place because my father and his family were staying there. It was too soon and sudden... I didn't want to have to deal with that 'downside' as well as try and enjoy hanging out with my classmates. That is a regret that I have. Looking back on it... I could've made other arrangements and still enjoyed everything.

Part of me knows I should go for my Grandmother's sake... She just wants peace. For once in her long hard life she would like to have kids that are actually getting along and have their shit together. Yet, the one kid that actually has his shit together can't seem to get along with the other two... (Yes, I consider myself 'her kid' since she raised me.)

Quite a hand to be dealt for her...

...one child suffered brain damage due to scarlett fever, recovering alcoholic.
...one child who raised hell as a teenager, abandonded two marraiges and children.
...and then there is me. If you read this blog or know me, then you already know my 'selling points.'

So to go and be there and be civil for the sake of peace for my Grandmother is something that I think I can do at least for a few hours. I'm not looking forward to the awkward "Hi, nice to see you after 10 years" hug that I'm sure will happen. Or the "this is my new wife, and your new brother and sister" conversations.

I really am trying kep an open mind about this. Even tho it probably doesn't sound like it. Yet, I'm doing it more for my Grandmother's sake than my own. I'd decided that the 'easiest' way to have it all would be to visit on an evening when we can all go out to dinner, and then if I feel like I can handle more I can always go back to the house for a longer visit, if not I can make an exit and still have made an appearance.

I'm going on vacation!!! YAY!! Of course it won't be for over another month, but I am going to Vegas! I find it amusing that my Grandmother has been there more times than I have. I plan to rectify that soon enough.

EVERYBODY HURTS by R.E.M.

Ok... I'm about to talk about two movies, Mystic River and Monster. If you've not seen either of these movies and don't want any spoilers then don't read this post.

In an attempt to make up for not seeing many of the Oscar films, I caught both these movies this week.

Mystic River
I can see why Sean Penn and Tim Robbins won Academy Awards for their roles in this film, as well as Marcia Gay Hardin being nominated. All of them delivered excellent performances. The general story follows the lives of three childhood friends. One of whom is abducted, molested and later escapes his captors, Boyle. He goes on to grow up in the same neighborhood as where his abduction took place. The second childhood friend, Jimmy grows up to serve some time in prison, and has connections to local mafia-esque activities. The third, Sean, grows up to work in law enforcement.

While each of them had their own personal hardships in the past 20 years.. it is the murder of Jimmy's oldest daughter that brings them back together. Sean is assigned to the case. Jimmy has his own ways of tracing the killer. Boyle stumbles home visibly shaking, covered in blood from a supposed mugging after a night of drinking. He claims to have killed the mugger.

The movie is not action packed in the sense of car chases and gun fights. Instead it is suspensful and draws you into the characters lives. It leaves you wondering what happens to the people even after the movie ends. As the story unfolds, the identity of murderer seems almost too obvious. I sat there watching it thinking that it can't be as simple as they are making it out to be. Then again... could it be one of those stories where it isn't so much about solving the case as it is the affect the case has on the characters.

Just in case some of you braved this review... I won't spoil the ending. I will say I wasn't disappointed in the ending at all. I love the type of movies where you aren't sure who to root for because there is no clear protagonist. There are no clear moral lines drawn in what any of these characters do. This was the movie that I thought would be the one to upset Lord Of The Rings making a clean sweep at the Oscars. I can't wait to own this movie.

Monster
Once again... I can CLEARLY see why Charlize Theron won for this movie. I went into knowing a little about the story. I knew that Charlize played the lead role, but by the end of the movie I really had to remind myself who it was. She throws herself so whole-heartedly into the role of the hooker/serial killer. Makeup aside... by the end of the movie there was very little of Miss Theron left in my mind as an actress, replaced by a man killer.

MAJOR SPOILERS!!!
The first john she kills I can understand even sympathize with why she did what she did. The second one I can even 'forgive.' All she would've had to do was turn herself in at that point and say why she did what she did and I think that it would've been a complete different ending for her. After that, it was just down hill... She begins killing and replaying the scene of her first victimization and justifies why she did what she did to her girlfriend, played by Christina Ricci. A lot of the movie seemed to be about acceptance. Aileen wanting to be accepted and loved. Selby (Ricci) wanting to be loved and accepted for being a lesbian.

It wasn't difficult to really feel sympathetic for either of these women. It's amazing what choices people make in even the most mundane of lives. Then to toss in a few unfortunate circumstances and poor choices made in bad situations and it is down hill quickly. Sometimes people don't recover from that. Aileen was one of those people.

The movie ended and I felt physically assaulted. I honestly felt like I had just been punched in the stomach. It was such a hard-hitting film, full of intense scenes backed by a powerful story. I wasn't sure if I felt weakened because I was glad to see that Aileen was arrested and justice was served and I felt 'guilty' because of thinking that way knowing so many people died as a result.

I DO know that I need to hold off on seeing any more dramatic movies for a long while. I don't think I can take another two hours of something so physically and emotionally draining as the type of movies I have been seeing lately. These two movies also come on the heels of Resevoir Dogs the weekend before.

Can I get a cute Disney film? Maybe something with Sandra Bullock...

NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS by Irving Berlin

Ok... What kind of an entertainment hound would I be if I didn't give my viewpoint on the Oscars? This may get a bit rambling so sorry if it isn't in a cohesive train of thought.

Overall, I was not surprised by anyone who received an award. If you followed the talk leading up to the Oscars, it was pretty clear who was going to win.

God bless Billy Crystal!! He is one of the funniest people to host the Oscars. They are idiots if they don't have him do it EVERY year.

Best Support Actor - Tim Robbins He made it thru a speech without making a political statement. I have not seen Mystic River yet, but his performance seemed very good from the clips I have seen. He looked good. Didn't seem to hippied out.

Best Supporting Actress - Renee Zellweger If her performance was anywhere near as convincing as her Southern accent then she must've done a damn good job and deserved to win. Consider her two co-stars both are from other countries, she hopefully would've had the easiest time picking up an accent. Tho, Renee always looks like she is about to cry. The entire night....

Best Original Screenplay - Sofia Coppola I was over at a friends house watching the Oscars and we all agreed that Sofia either was very uncomfortable or a bitch. She just looked like she could have cared less to be there. She is the first American Woman Director to be nominated. Is it too much to act even a littleenthused?

Best Actress - Charlize Theron She had some great people nominated with her, but overall it was said she had the strongest performance. Monster looks like an intense, but great movie. I'll confirm or deny this later in the week, hopefully. (Sidenote: I loved Adrian Brody's announcement of the award. Giving his enthusiasm last year... it was a great laugh to see him play off it this year.)

Best Actor - Sean Penn He has come a long way from his earlier days as an actor. For all the clips they showed of Mystic River, I REALLY need to go see this movie at some point.

Best Picture My theory going into it was that Lord of the Rings would win all the technical stuff, but be passed over for top award of the night. Even considering how massive of an undertaking it was to produce, who would vote a fantasy film as best picture. So I was a little surprised to see that they won. I was thrilled!! It was a great movie(s).

I've fallen in LOVE with a lot of new music. I had to get my hands on the Cold Mountain soundtrack. Allison Krause and Sting had just a haunting rendition of "You Will Be My Ain True Love." Then, to have her sing with a choir... WOW! For some reason, I am always moved but such vocal power as a full choir singing such folky songs. That's why I loved the music from "O' Brother Where Art Thou." A Mighty Wind's "A Kiss At The End Of The Rainbow" was not only sweet, but funny. Just like the movie. I've always been a big fan of Annie Lennox. Her voice is can be so subtle and yet so powerful. She displays it all in her song "Into The West" from Lord of the Rings. "Belleville Rendez-vous" was just a fun song. I'd only heard a little about this movie, and even then only recently. But it was a great song. Definitely worth checking into more.

Overall I was surprised at how few political statements were made. I figured Sean Penn would make some comment. I figured (and was surprised) Tim Robbins would make some statement. I laughed at the whole Michael Moore stint where he was trampled by a Lord Of The Rings Oliphant. That was funny. So I suppose three actual comments in 3 1/2 hours.... for Hollywood that is doing pretty good.

I was horrible this last year and didn't see many of the Oscar nominated films. I plan to make up for it this year.
