TIE A YELLOW RIBBON 'ROUND THE OLD OAK TREE by Tony Orlando & Dawn
Ribbons are prevelant now more than ever. You could see a couple dozen of them just in a trip across town. My feelings sway back and forth when it comes to showing public support for something or some cause. Not that I don't care, it just seems like overkill. I noticed a car in a parking lot that had no less than 30 to 40 ribbons all over it. The hood... The doors... The roof... Everything was covered in various magnetic ribbons of support. You would think someone would just come out with a multi-useful ribbon that supports everything.
Red, White, & Blue - Patriotism
Yellow - Armed Forces Pink - Cancer Awareness
Blue - Free Speech
Red - AIDS/HIV
Rainbow - Gay Pride
Just to name a few... There are tons out there!
I've had this discussion with people before about showing support for something. When 9/11 happened I had a small flag hanging in my car from my rearview mirror. I've got a rainbow sticker on my vehicle now. I will wear Huskers paraphenalia on game days. I'll wear seasons colors sometimes. Orange & black on Halloween... Green on St Patrick's Day... Red, White & Blue on The 4th... I guess I wonder at what point the sentiment of support becomes cliched or overdone... or can it even be cliched or overdone?
I use football as an example because of how big college football is in the area. If a person has a red car, Cornhusker license plates, a magnetic N, a Husker flag stuck in their window... is that too much? Would one or two pieces of paraphenalia be enough to show your support for a cause? Is it overkill to plow "Go Huskers" in your cornfield?
